Next Steps After Working in Canada
Canada offers a variety of work permit options that allow foreign nationals to work legally and gain valuable experience. A work permit is a written authorization issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), allowing individuals to take employment while residing temporarily in Canada. It is not a visa but typically accompanies a visitor visa or eTA for entry.
Work permits can be open or employer-specific. They are issued for a limited duration and may require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). A work permit may also be a stepping stone toward permanent residency through programs like the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP).
There are two primary categories of work permits in Canada:
Some permits are LMIA-exempt under international agreements (e.g., CUSMA, intra-company transfers) or due to Canada's broader economic or cultural interests.
The application process varies by permit type and your current location. In general, the following documents are required:
You can apply online through the IRCC portal or through a Visa Application Centre (VAC). Biometrics and interviews may also be requested during processing. Ensure all documents are complete and accurate to avoid delays or refusals.
Once approved, you will receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction. Present this letter to the border officer upon arrival along with your visa or eTA, job offer, and supporting documents. The officer will then issue your actual work permit at the port of entry.
Be prepared to answer questions about your job, employer, and stay in Canada. Bring printed copies of:
If your employment continues or you change employers, you may be eligible to extend or modify your permit. Apply before your current permit expires to maintain your legal status. Extensions require updated documents and, in some cases, new LMIA approvals.
Many temporary workers apply for permanent residency through:
Work experience gained in Canada can significantly boost your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score when applying under Express Entry.
