Super Visa Overview

The Super Visa is a long-term, multiple-entry visa designed for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Unlike a regular visitor visa, it allows extended stays of up to 5 years per visit, with the option to apply for extensions from within Canada.

The Super Visa is valid for up to 10 years and offers families a way to reunite while avoiding the long processing times of the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program. It requires private medical insurance and proof of financial support from the sponsoring child or grandchild.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a Super Visa, you must:

• Be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
• Have a signed letter of invitation from your child or grandchild
• Show proof of financial support from your host in Canada (meeting minimum income requirements)
• Have valid medical insurance from a Canadian company (minimum $100,000 coverage for at least 1 year)
• Complete an immigration medical exam

Spouses or common-law partners can also apply, but dependents (children) cannot be included on a Super Visa application.

Required Documents

Your application must include:

• A valid passport
• Invitation letter from your child/grandchild in Canada
• Proof of relationship (birth certificate, etc.)
• Proof of private medical insurance
• Proof of income from your host (NOA, T4, employment letter)
• Completed application forms and biometric data

Additional documents may be requested depending on the country of residence or the specifics of your application.

How to Apply

Applications are usually submitted online through the IRCC website. Steps include:

• Complete the online application and upload supporting documents
• Pay the processing and biometric fees
• Schedule and attend a biometric appointment (if required)
• Wait for a decision and submit your passport if a visa is approved

Processing times vary, so it’s important to apply well in advance of your intended travel date.

After Arrival

Upon arrival, you’ll present your Super Visa to a border officer who will authorize your stay. Most Super Visa holders can remain in Canada for up to 5 years per entry without renewing their visa.

If you wish to stay longer, apply for an extension at least 30 days before your current authorized stay expires. Keep your medical insurance valid throughout your visit to maintain eligibility.

Super Visa holders are not allowed to work or study in Canada and must maintain their visitor status at all times.
