At the Border: What to Bring
How to Request More Time
A Visitor Visa (also known as a Temporary Resident Visa or TRV) allows foreign nationals to enter Canada temporarily for tourism, visiting family or friends, or short-term business activities. It is generally valid for up to 6 months and can be issued as either a single-entry or multiple-entry visa.
Citizens of visa-required countries must obtain a TRV before traveling. Those from visa-exempt countries may need an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) instead. Entry is not guaranteed, and final decisions are made at the Canadian port of entry.
There are two primary types of visitor visas:
Both types typically allow a stay of up to 6 months per visit, but the border officer has the final say on duration.
You can apply online via the IRCC portal or submit a paper application through a Visa Application Centre (VAC). The following documents are typically required:
Depending on your nationality, you may also need to provide biometrics, a medical exam, or additional documents. A strong application should demonstrate that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit.
When you arrive at a Canadian port of entry, present your passport, visa, and any supporting documents. The border officer will verify your purpose of travel, duration of stay, and financial means.
Be prepared with printed copies of:
Border officers may ask questions about your plans and ties to your home country. Be honest and concise in your responses.
If you wish to stay in Canada beyond the authorized period, you must apply for a visitor record at least 30 days before your status expires. This does not guarantee an extension, but if approved, it will specify how long you can remain in Canada legally.
Overstaying your visa can affect future travel and immigration applications. It’s important to maintain valid status throughout your stay.
